What is The Monstrous?
We will be exploring the idea of transformation and becoming through the use of clay; we will be using the material to facilitate monstrous transformation. Each student will have the opportunity to work with clay in a guided ritual performance. Students will work in pairs – one student experimenting with the clay while their pair documents the process. Then you will switch roles.
Dr. Vanessa Macaulay, Performing Monstrous Flesh
The experience of transformation seemed daunting in the begging, touching and interacting with clay to facilitate it felt more natural than what it sounds like. Touching raw materials that our connected to our physical being and the molding of the human experience. How are we able to describe it? Were we creating the Monstrous based on our life experiences? Or is it the path of life that creates our own Monster?
Layers and Layers of clay encompass’s what being with one’s self can look like. Submission into the material to the point of blindness, trusting the material to guide the movements and stillness. How are we able to trust earth or minerals for that fact? Duration for an hour helped give a brief insight on visualizing our own experiences.
