Painted capsule, an archive created

Final Piece_May_101

The process came as an idea to think of a time capsule as a brush stroke taking its time to paint through blank spaces. What printmaking aspects did we create as our memories flow through physical objects? Does the process create artistry beyond what we can think of as an impressionate example of our travels? Do our feelings take on physical adaptations as to interpret our existence? If so, why is it important for us to not submit to obscurity, the fear of oblivion I say. I think of a capsule to hold what once was, thoughts, memories, point of views and an archive of a time once lived.

I have always been infatuated by the past, what my parents witnessed, what my grandparents have gone through and where do my roots travel to. I wish we kept memories, had the time to speak about stories of past lives, of our encompassed existence of a life once lived. I leaned towards clothes that are 40 years old, antiques, furniture from mahogany cut in 1910. Some might view it as escapist, but I view it as a story waiting to be told again, a preserved photograph in time. What histories can we learn?

SHiiiiz Talk (Ahmad almahdi and Julia Sim) Chicago DAys

The podcast Julia sim and I recorded in Chicago during 2022 and 2023 is a reflection of the specific time period we lived, where you hear our voices, you hear what we reflected on, our stories and a recollection with venting and quiet therapy for both of us. It’s a reflection of an era of oversharing on an internet radio station that barely gets listeners in, but we wanted to record it, keep it as an archive and have folks listen to them after they were recorded. We had about 10 listeners every week and it was a good time, but every time I hear it back, I remember a time where we were excited to create work. We enjoyed being in the radio station, meeting each other after a long day and recording how we felt in the moment, in the time we started recording and what music we were listening to.

Impressionism of time and space, as we remember how our imagination can construct a reality that maybe gets glamorized with rose colored glasses, insured silence and a peace achieved by the end of triumph, maybe moments cringe, regret. Nonetheless what mentioned is to remember presents is the ultimate time capsule, as a view of reality surrounding us. I discuss trying to ground myself on a daily basis, but it’s a consistent finding of peace; humans naturally worry, so maybe preserving a hint of our existence can ease our memory of the presents.

As we listen to memories, we hold to memory through works created. As the artist I have  to remember how my skills can translate into processes of merging colors together with the intention to evoke human thought beyond surface, maybe communicate what I am feeling as I tend to get my friend telling me how much she sees me in the work, what better way to encompass myself if my memories are not surrounded by paintings created out of sheer discovery of my emotional status during transitional periods of my life. From 19 on 163rd, to 27 Arion Place at 23.

I leave with a link to an album played consistently during 2017 to 2019
